almost directly opposite downtown Brisbane. The area was really nice, and there were a lot of other groups climbing up the sheer cliff walls. We each took one climb. I was able to make it to the top of the cliff during my climb even though I 'fell' quite a few times, with one spot in particular giving me a lot of trouble. But eventually I made it to the top with a cut thumb and scraped shin as battle wounds.

After the climbing there was a BBQ put on by the club using one of the many public grills/picnic areas between the cliffs and the river. The people in the club seem really nice and I am considering joining for the semester (although I may have to invest in some climbing shoes if I do because the shoes I have are definitely not meant for climbing).

A couple of weekends ago before classes started, some of my friends and I decided to take a weekend excursion to the Gold Coast and visit Surfer's Paradise. Surfer's is about an hour south of Brisbane by train, which is not bad at all considering that, with a student discount, round-trip train fare was only 8 bucks. We left on Friday afternoon and got into the town just in time to book some of the last spots in one of the many backpackers' hotels (i.e. youth hostels). The backpacker was cheap, but yet nice and interesting. My roommate Victor and shared a room with two Spanish guys who were traveling the world.

Surfer's Paradise is definitely not your grandparents quiet, relaxed, surfer town. It is full of high rises, shops, and people from all over the country and globe. On Saturday, we spent the whole day at the beach which was very nice, and surprisingly not too crowded (probably because the Gold Coat has 57km of beautiful beaches!). I believe the pictures speak for themselves as to the sheer brilliance of the Australian coastline.

The waves were the largest that I have ever actually seen or been in, considering I have only ever seen waves from the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, and Lake Erie, its not too much of a surprise. Thus, I made the most of it and spent a lot of time in the water with my friends giving body surfing a go (the waves where we were weren't the really good actual surfing ones, those are found at different spots on the beach).

After a day at the beach we were all exhausted, but decided it would be fun to find somewhere decent to eat dinner. We ended up at an Italian place where we were greeted by the owner, who immediately took a liking to our group, and gave us all complimentary garlic bread. After he talked to us for a bit I asked him what part of Italy he was from. to which he replied Calabria! (that's the area my Grandad Ussia is from). He enjoyed the fact that I was also Calabrase, and chatted with us for quite some time longer. The food was also very good, and capped off an excellent day. On Sunday, we caught the train back to Brisbane to face the realty of starting classes that Monday.

For the second day in Cairns, we went off to the Great Barrier Reef for some snorkel and scuba action. We went out with a local tour company, Passions of Paradise. The staff was really energetic and helpful and made the trip really fun. One of the divers was amazing at card tricks. He actually did one with me in which he guessed the card that I chose out of an invisible deck (i.e. I just pretended to pick a card while thinking of the card i wanted) and then that card was facing up in a deck that he pulled out of his pocket at the end of the trick. Needless to say, myself and everyone else watching was quite amazed (I also felt strangely violated, haha).

Anyway, we went out in a big catamaran that had a large cabin and ample places to sit out on the deck including a net across the front of the boat. The trip out to the reef took about 1 hour 45 minutes, and so we were able to relax on the boat and enjoy the sunshine, although the wind made it a bit chilly. The part of the reef we went to was right next to a small sand island that was home to thousands of birds. The island was very protected because at any given time up to 100,000 birds mate there.

While we were sailing, they let us sign up to scuba dive if we wished at a cost of $70. I figured it would definitely be worth it and signed myself up. I was in the third diving group, so that meant that when we first arrived I went snorkeling for a bit. They provided a wetsuit, flippers, a mask, and a snorkel and pretty much let us do our own thing as long as we didn't go too far. I had never been snorkeling before and when I first went out over the reef I was dumbstruck. At first I thought I was going to run into the coral and fish because everything looked so close to the surface, but once I got over the initial shock of being so close to the multitude of colorful fish and coral, I was able to really take it all in. It really did feel like I was watching a nature show because there were so many different kinds of fish swimming around all over the place, both in schools and individually. Also, the coral itself was mesmerizing as it swayed with the flow of the ocean. Basically I was able to just float around with minimal effort and really enjoy the view. Additionally, the snorkel had a valve that allowed you to dive under without taking in water, which I did to get a closer view of some fish and coral.

After about an 45 minutes of snorkeling I swam back to the boat for my scuba diving group. First, we went over the various basic hand motions and practices that are used while under water to communicate. Then we got all of our gear on including the tank, which also has an inflatable portion to allow you to float, and a weight belt (that stuff is really heavy when you aren't underwater!). Next, we practiced breathing with the tube. This process is very weird at first because there is a slight delay when you first breathe and then when the air actually kicks in and enters your lungs. I felt, and sounded, kinda like Darth Vader. When we first jumped in I had quite a rush of adrenaline and could feel myself biting very hard on the mouth piece, but after a bit I relaxed and began to feel pretty comfortable. Our instructor took us down to the floor, about 12 meters or so.

Right when we reached the ocean floor somone in my group accidentally bumped my mask up allowing it to fill with water! I dare say I almost panicked, but I remembered what they told us to do in the situation, which is to hold the top of the mask and tilt your hand back while blowing out with your nose. So I did that and was able to clear out basically all of the water and regain my vision. After a quick checkdown by the instructor we were ready to go. She took us around the edge of the reef and allowed us to swim where ever we wanted as long as we followed her. The feeling of being that far under water was very cool and strangely liberating. We got to swim through a school of meter-long fish, touch the inside of a huge sea clam, and see some fish like to one from Finding Nemo. Then after a little over half an hour under water it was time to return to the surface and get some food.

After lunch I went back out for more snorkeling in a slightly different area. One really cool thing I noticed was that the parrot fish, which are large and brightly colored, make an audible CHOMP as they chow down on their meal of choice, the really hard brain coral. Also, I got a chance to swim right above a big sea turtle as I was making my way back to the boat! I must say that the scuba diving and snorkeling have, so far, been the best experiences of my trip.

On the way back the wind picked up a lot, making the ride quite fun for me, but unfortuneately sickening for some others. I was one of the few who braved standing out on the deck as the boat went over huge waves causing spray to wash over the side of the boat. However, since I was on the deck I was rewarded by getting to see, in the distance,

The first full day in Cairns, my orientation group went to a
slightly overly touristy spot in the forested mountains near the city that was aptly named, Rainforestaion (http://www.rainforest.com.au/). When we
first walked through the gates we were greeted by our aborigine guide who
proceeded to demonstrate how he can throw a spear over 150 meters by using an extra "arm" like this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=zAoZdTVkt1A).

Next our guide showed us how to play a didgeridoo. The most
incredible part was that he was able to continue to play while taking a fresh
breath in through his nose. Thus, he could play indefinitely without stopping
for air if he so desired. Then, we all got to give throwing a boomerang a go. When
I threw I actually got it to come back towards me but then it continued over my
head and landed on the roof covering one of the walkways. After that, we got a
see some traditional aborigine dancing displayed by a troupe on a small stage. At the
end of the show they picked out people from the crowd to try dancing on the
stage aborigine-style. One of the dancers decided that I would be a good
candidate and told me to come one stage. I figured, why not, and made my way to
the stage where I got to do the “shake-a-leg,” which consists of holding your
hands in front of you, and you guessed It, shaking your legs. Then, you end the
dance by creating a pose that involves one leg lifted into the air. After
making an ass of myself, we got to eat a delicious lunch of grilled steak,
chicken, and sausage along with stir-fried noodles and veggies. There was also
a variety of fresh fruits including mango and passion fruit.

After lunch we went for a ride through the rainforest in an old
amphibious vehicle. This part was really cool and we got to see the beautiful yet, unsurprisingly, dangerous (like a lot of
things in Australia) foliage and fauna. As we drove through the mountains and across a lake, the scenery was beautiful (so beautiful, in fact that it didn't even seem real). The driver/tour guide we had was full of wise cracks and information about the area. One plant that he spent a lot of time talking about is the painful stinging tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrocnide_moroides) which I would never want to experience.

After the ride we got to get our pictures taken holding a koala. The one we used was surprisingly heavy and really liked to cling onto your shirt. Next we saw some other animals including dingos, snakes, lizards, birds, and crocodiles (including one huuuuge saltwater croc that was nicknamed Jack the Ripper because he used to live on a croc farm, and he always killed the females that he mated with). Then we got a chance to walk into the kangaroo area and feed and pet them which was really cool.

Then the day was over and we wound our way back down the mountain to Cairns.

On the day of my departure my mom, dad, Nikki, and I left
the house at 6:30 am on Sunday July 6th. I didn’t arrive in Cairns until
two deodorant applications later on Tuesday, July 8th around 4:30 pm Australia
time, which made the total transit time close to 44 hours!! Suffice to say, it
was a long trip, but, surprisingly, it actually wasn’t too bad. During the
almost 12 hour layover I spent in the international terminal of the San
Francisco, I was able to connect with a lot of other students who were doing
the AustraLearn program both with the University of Queensland and various
other schools around Australia. Chatting with other people from all over the US
made the wait more bearable and I got to meet some cool people.

The flight to Australia itself also went relatively quickly,
emphasis on the relative part, 14 hours can only go so fast. I flew Qantas Air
which had personal TV screens for each passenger with tons of movies, new and
old, along with TV shows and music. The food was probably the best I have ever
had on an airline. I had salmon for dinner, an omlete for breakfast, and snacks
of fresh fruit, chocolate, and oatmeal cookies. Every passenger also received the
standard blanket (that actually kept you warm), eye cover, and socks, plus a
warm, moist towel (I felt like first class!). Additionally, in my flight from
Sydney to Cairns, I got a lunch of sweet and sour chicken and a fudge ice cream
bar. On the other hand, on my US Ar flight from Pittsburgh to San Francisco,
which was two hours longer, I didn’t get any
food for free but had the option to buy a sandwich lunch for $7.50 (and US
airlines wonder why people are complaining).

I did have one minor setback when attempting to go through
customs in Sydney. Apparently, Australia is very strict about bringing anything
into the country that may contain organisms. One such item is dirt. Dirt is
something that is found on soccer cleats, and wouldn’t you know it, I brought
my cleats. I had to declare them and pull them out of my bag to show on of the
customs officers. I didn’t remember at the time how dirty I had left my cleats
the last time I used them. I was afraid they would be filthy. Luckily, or so I thought,
when I pulled out the cleats the only had a little dirt on a few treads. However
the officer did not feel the same way and seemed incredulous that I would dare
to have such filthy cleats in his airport, whoops. Since I declared them
though, I didn’t get in any real trouble and just had to wait for them to clean
off the dirt in a quarantine room. But let that be a lesson to anyone planning
on visiting Australia, CLEAN YOUR SHOES.

That’s all I have for now,

Cheers (I’m trying to use Australian phrases)

Unfortunately, this post will not be very long because I am trying to race against my laptop battery as I use the wireless internet on campus. The good news is that as soon as I manage to get internet in the apartment I will give a more detailed account of my experiences so far.

The basic time line is as follows:

Tues July 8th
Arrived in Cairns (pronounced /ˈkeːnz/ or /ˈkɛɹnz/ or (cans) after a very looooonnnnnggggggg voyage.
Wed July 9th
Went to Rainforestation which is a fun little tourist spot with kangaroos, crocodiles, and the chance to throw a boomerang and take a picture with a koala.
Thurs July 10th
Took a catamaran out to the Great Barrier Reef and went snorkeling and scuba diving (abolutely one of the coolest experiences of my entire life)
Fri July 11th
Arrived in Brisbane (pronounced /ˈbrɪzbən/) and moved into my apartment which is amazing (it has a balcony, a patio, a backyard, a pool, and a BBQ). I have one roomate from Iowa (Victor).
Sat July 12th
Took the bus into downtown Brisbane and walked around. It very modern with a large walking mall smack dab in the middle of the city with shops, restaurants, and a couple casinos.
Sun July 13th
Explored campus and RELAXED (which was awesome).
Mon July 14th
Had orientation for international students
Tues July 15th
Continued orientation and I am pretty sure I have my course schedule figured out at this point. I have an Australian politics course, and Australian political economy course, an Australian Criminal Justice course, and a Modern Music course.

Well, that's a quick rundown of what I have been up to. I am really enjoying Australia so far, and it is only a matter of time before I am walking and talking like an Australian.

Keep a lookout for more detailed posts (and pictures) involving such exciting happenings as my endless voyage, my dancing with aborigines, and my underwater adventures.

Hello everyone! I suppose this is my official going away post seeing that tomorrow is the big day of my departure to Australia (where I will be until November 29th). I still am not sure if it has fully sunk in, but I'm sure it will hit me at some point tomorrow (probably flying over the Pacific!). Nevertheless, I am still in the process of packing everything together, while hoping I don't forget any major items.

But the main purpose of this post it to let everyone know that as soon as I can get internet access I plan on posting updates as often as I can about various subjects and happenings. Also, if there is any topic you would like me to write about feel free to let me know through email or comments on this site.

I will miss everyone while I am gone, but I hope that this blog will serve as a good way for me to stay connected to all of my friends and family and keep you all posted on how much fun I'm having (just think, when it starts to get cold you will have pictures of me at the beach to cheer you up).

Until next time ...
